When I first started watching it seemed like a drama in a beautiful setting about the slow burning clash between family, history, government and progress that would have some powerful lessons and storytelling. Thinking of something like Mad Men.
Then they went off the rails and went into murder, assassinations, and characters becoming caricatures of themselves. I would love a TV set in the west - present or old - that told some good stories with likable characters.

Perfect example of it doesn't matter how great the actors are if the writing sucks

It started out strong and ended up being a modern day Dallas. There is nothing wrong with that, but people still wanted to portray is as prestige television. I still enjoyed it for a while, but it became monotonous, ridiculous, and overly dramatic. The more the show focused on Beth, the worse it became.

It turned into a garbage show for sure. Started out great. Sorta like a Western gangster show that touched on a few social/cultural issues pretty well, such as Indian tensions and land rights. I've spent a fair amount of time out west and there was some relevancy to the show.
But then we get wokiness, women in the bunkhouse, Indian whining, ridiculous storylines and.........Beth.
She was fun in the beginning but no development, no arc, no evolution in her character at all. Just an a-hole who sucks all the oxygen out of the show. And Rip, the guy's just a constant dick, always. He's never not a dick.
I got through two seasons and then stopped.

I actually disagree about it starting off great. The first season was chock full of cringe, hyper melodrama, over-acting, dumb story lines, and bad characters.
but I liked John, Kayce, Rip, maybe a few others, and the great setting enough that I watched anyway and enjoyed it ok.

Deadwood. The show you're looking for is Deadwood.

I was obsessed w/ Deadwood. And loved the first three movies Taylor Sheridan wrote. I thought his dialogue was perfect. I was so excited for Yellowstone. And then it became a night time soap opera. I still get irrationally angry about how downhill - and quickly - at that. Oh well.

Also good along that vein is the Centennial television mini-series based on Michner's work

truth
as long as she was in the background and only had something to say ocassionally, it was good, she served a purpose.
then for some reason, i think costner wanting to quit and poo pooing all the story lines with him in it, was the main reason, he was the reason they made him governor as a way to remove him from the show. but a show without the main star is never going to work.
when they decided she was to be the main charactor the show focused on over all others, the show was doomed

I mean the very first episode gave off SOA vibes. I think some expectations were skewed primarily because of the location.

Focusing so much around Beth kinda ruined it for me. After season 3 I was kinda done.
